CARRIE ABYSS, the urgent, politically charged new project of London-based artist Bernadette Lara, is cathartic rage manifested. A punch-in-the-guts-powerful distillation of her years of musical experience and wide range of influences that has misogyny, queerphobia and the oppressive political situation of her native Türkiye firmly in its sights.
Alt-pop and modern metal fuse to craft something as hyper and fun as it is caustic and eviscerating. An honest, emotionally maximalist musical exploration of her early-20s identity crisis that brings to mind the soundtrack to an epic final boss battle in a feminist-revenge video game.
With an Assyrian / Armenian heritage, Lara was raised in a small community of minorities in Istanbul, Türkiye. She started to play the piano at the age of 7, began songwriting at the age of 12 and was producing her own songs by the age of 15. She graduated from her Music Technologies Bachelor's Degree as the highest-ranking student.
She is also the co-founder of the underground non-profit collective nekolektif and has organized and performed at numerous gigs, art markets and parties as a key figure in Istanbul's underground queer scene, while also hosting a radio show at Aaja Radio. After publishing songs via GROW, an imprint of one of Türkiye's most recognized labels' Avrupa Müzik, she has gathered a considerable fan-base in Türkiye.
Under the moniker CARRIE ABYSS, she released the industrial, emotionally raw EP mass destruction. (2024) alongside the upcoming short film. She performed at several venues for the promotion such as The Old Blue Last, The Black Heart and Strongroom Bar, opening for the German alternative sensation FLØRE. She also released HEY, SINNER, a fully self-produced electronic concept EP with dystopian medieval and goth themes, telling the story of a young woman who commits a sin and is punished by God, then finds salvation in the forbidden.
Her upcoming work is a modern metal / alternative-pop album, GANGBANG, currently being co-produced with Matthew Parisi, known for his work with Nobody's Wolf Child as well as engineering for some of the UK's biggest pop and rock producers. HEY, SINNER traces the tragic backstory of CARRIE with its epic storytelling and witch-hunt metaphor, while her unreleased album GANGBANG is a document of her queer fury, with her anger at oppression, misogyny, and the corrupt nature of humankind all palpable across its 13 tracks.

From Carrie

The building this photoshoot takes place in is on a hill in Burgaz Island and it's about to collapse. We went in from the window. A really dangerous shoot, especially with the candles and the no-trespassing signs around it.

I came up with the idea when I got lost in the office I work at. I video-called Irmak and said: ‘I'm lost in the office, imagine if a mysterious girl in office clothes shows up in these empty, bland halls.' Two days later we shot it.

Washing out the blood in this photoshoot was the hardest thing ever.

Hey, Sinner is about the most primal instincts of humankind and how violent we can be in case of emergency. We wanted to convey the fear, guilt and pain of being human.

I stayed in this shibari for half an hour; in time my body started feeling numb. mass destruction. tells the story of a girl trying to find her old self back after a mass destruction. They also dropped fake blood in my eyes, so it's my real reaction.
